World
Music Drumming - Taught
by Elizabeth Melvin, the World Music Drumming residency is an introduction
to learning the percussion, rhythms, and singing of West Africa
and the Caribbean. Using a set of tunable conga drums, plus various
hand-held percussion such as rattles, cowbells, and talking drums,
the students learn drumming techniques, individual rhythms, and
ensemble playing. They explore the connection of African and Latin
American cultural traditions to the music performed, and discover
how music can be the perfect vehicle for fostering intercultural
understanding. World Music Drumming brings the enjoyment and excitement
of music participation while building important life-skills, such
as communication, listening, teamwork, discipline and respect for
others. Designed specifically for middle school students, the curriculum
can be adapted to be great fun for all ages!
